Aging Youthfully
According to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, skeletal muscle is the key to staying forever strong. She says, “The higher your healthy muscle mass, the greater your protection against all-cause mortality and morbidity.”
“How do I increase my healthy muscle mass?” you may ask. The answer is simple, yet not many people know. PROTEIN! Protein is the first thing you should be eating with any meal. Protein alone won’t get you more muscle mass, but protein AND strength training will.
Muscle is the key to longevity and taking action to rebalance the effect of losing and gaining muscle, you can slow the process of aging. And good news, it’s not too late to make these changes to your diet and exercise.
It is important to challenge your muscles when strength training. Challenging your muscles doesn’t mean ego lifting. Instead, it means control the weight. Increase reps, sets, slow your movement down, etc when things start to get easy. With that being said, don’t be afraid to grab heavier weights, they won’t make you ‘bulky’. Taking these steps along with eating an adequate amount of protein will help insure you have more skeletal muscle. It is important to note that muscle mass can actually burn more fat.
So what is the key to aging youthfully? According to Dr. Gabrielle Lyon and many others, it’s an abundance of skeletal muscle mass and protein!
